Winthrop Ski Derby Saturday, February 9, 2013

Methow Valley Nordic Club proudly presents the Winthrop Ski Derby, a new classic style race at the Sun Mountain trail system, Chickadee Trailhead. Skiers can choose either 16 or 32 km distance. Separate mass or wave starts at 9 am will take place for the two races, depending on number of entrants. Race entry includes grooming, timing, aid stations, and an awards party with food and door prizes at Carlos’ 1800 Mexican Restaurant in Winthrop. Come on up and enjoy the wonderfully varied trails of Sun Mountain!

The 16 km course is rolling and utilizes most of the lower trails and is similar to the popular course used for the first day of the MV Pursuit. The course has great classic ski terrain, with many small hills, smooth transitions, and limited flat stretches.

The 32 km course is unique and offers a challenge of skiing in more mountainous terrain. The first half of the 32 km race climbs to Thompson Pass via Lower Inside Passage and Meadowlark trails, then descends to near the start on Thompson Rd before beginning the second half on the same trails as the 16km race. The significant elevation changes of the 32 km race will give the event a very different flavor from most ski loppets.

Registration is online at Webscorer (link below), or in person on day of race. Participants are strongly encouraged to register online. Bib pick-up is between 7:45 and 8:30 am inside Chickadee Warming Hut. Race start is at 9 am for both distances.

Cost for online registration is $32 before midnight, February 3, and $40 thereafter. Online race entry for skiers under 18 is $20. Online registration closes at 8 pm Friday, February 8. Day of race registration is 7:45 - 8:15 am inside Chickadee Warming Hut and costs $45 for adults, and $25 under 18. Day-of-race payment is by check or cash only.

An MVSTA trail pass is not required for this event. However, if you plan to ski after the race (i.e. Saturday afternoon), you will need to purchase one. Saturday afternoon trail passes can be purchased by Derby participants at the reduced rate of $10 as part of your online registration or in person at the race venue.

This new event is an all-volunteer effort and has been undertaken to help make up for event cutbacks by MVSTA. If you would like XC ski racing to continue at a healthy level in the Methow Valley, please consider helping the Nordic Club in putting on this race. Shirts can be purchased online with your race registration, or by mail with order form and check. Deadline: we must receive your T-shirt order by Monday, January 28, 2013 to guarantee availability. Some shirts will also be available to purchase on race day, however, our extra supply will be quite limited so please purchase by the deadline to assure availability of your style and size.
